"I returned to a favorite portable site under a large Live Oak tree on a ranch in northern Burnet County, Texas. Horses and cows didn't bother me - and no snakes were observed. High temp in the afternoon was 102F with a steady, hot breeze. Definitely not confused with FYBO contest! Rig Elecraft K3 - 5W. 44ft doublet at 40 feet and a 40/20M fan dipole at 30 feet. " |

"I tried a new QTH this year. I was up on Mt. Herman in Monument, CO, elevation 9054 feet. FB views both east and west. And at the top, there's quite a steep drop in both directions, with a beautiful view of Pikes Peak to the west (14,116 feet). When I first arrived at the top, there were 2 hangliders floating...one above me and one below me. Very cool. Some of the Bees and others running QRP were amazingly loud for most of the 4 hours. I was able to work just about everyone I could hear. Some of my CW sending left a little to be desired from time-to-time and I apologize for that. I was trying to send and swat flies at the same time. I found that I can't do that. My CW suffers, the flies do not. Tried a new 5W flexible solar panel and A&A Engineering Smart Battery Charger board with great results. Thanks to all for the QSOs. I already look forward to next year...Shel BB#86" |

"I carried my gear on foot up a steep trail to a nice hilltop in pinewoods at 8300 feet west of Lyons, CO. It was 88 degrees in the shade through the FOBB event, but the lightning gods did not rumble or strike until after the event. I used my ATS-3B in an Altoids box at 5W, a BLT, and a 40 meter full-wave loop at 25 feet, hundreds of feet above the surrounding terrain, and thousands of feet above the Plains out on the horizon. This was my first FOBB experience, and it was a lot of fun. I had mini-pileups and calls from people so weak I could not copy, despite being in an RF quiet, undeveloped area of the National Forest. I operated without a chair, did not use a memory keyer, had no computer, and no ground. " |

"Band conditions were terrible here. No signals on 15 or 10. 20M had some good signals from New England, Mi, Wi, Il, Mn, Mo, lots of CO. Fair signals from NM and CA. Workable signals from TX, OR, WA, UT, WY. Never could hear K7TQ in ID loud enough to call. 40 had long skip as I could not hear W4QO about 100 miles away. Could work surrounding states, SC, NC, TN, plus VA, MS, TX. Spent some time helping XYL babysit 17 month old grandson. He's too young to sit still for long! Very few contacts for the number of BBs committed to be QRV. Hope everyone had a few contacts and that next year will find us with much improved conditions." |

"Great hike on the Horse Nettle Trail on Brush Mountain in SW VA. 40 and 20 meters only, on Inv. Vees, up about 30 feet over bare tree limb in the woods. K1 at 5 Watts with two gel cells. Great breeze half-way through, blowing humidity away. Wall-to-wall sunshine with little white clouds. Not so many contacts as last year, but great to work old friends, working Steve AB4I, Bee Nr. 115 on both bands, and especially Jim W1PID, Bee Nr. 8, near end of event. Hike out got me back to car 1 1/2 hours after contest over. Great day. I love this contest! " |

"Well, conditions on 20 meters were better here in southwest Utah for this contest than during the NAQCC sprint on July 17th (0030Z to 0230Z) so go figure! Went to 40, 15 and 10 a couple of times and never heard one station so.....my 37 QSOs were on 20 meters. Heard two station during most of the four hours - N7OU and K7TQ. Worked mostly west coast and midwest stations but did manage a couple of east coasters. Next time I'm headed to Brian Head ('bout 11000 feet) to see if that'll help me." |

"THE ""WIND STORM FROM HELL"" PLAYED HAVOC!! IT BLEW MY FOLDING CHAIR AWAY WHEN I DIDN'T SIT IN IT; IT DISCONNECTED MY ANTENNA FROM THE TUNER, MADE LOGGING A CHORE, BLEW THE PEN OFF THE TABLE TWICE! I HAVE ONLY ONE USEFUL HAND SINCE MY STROKE. THE WHOLE CONTEST GAVE ME FITS. TEARING DOWN, THE ANT WIRE TANGLED UP IN THE HELLISH WINDSTORM AFTER THE CONTEST. WADDED IT UP AND THREW IT IN A CRATE IN DISGUST. N5DRB AND I ""HAD THE ""PATIENCE OF JOB!"" AFTER MANY REPEATS, WE FINALLY QSO'D! TOOK ABT 10 MINUTES! WE WERE BOTH ""FLYIN' LOW."" BUZZZZZZ! CONDX PEE POOR. QSB/QRN TERRIBLE. PUT THE CANS ON, BUT WIND NOISE WAS ABOUT 20 DB OVER S9! SAW MANY DUCKS AND CANADA GEESE FROM THE QTH. GREAT TO WORK MANY QRP FRIENDS. HPE CU NEXT YR. " |

"I set bumblebee station #52 up at the primitive camping area in Pedernales Falls State Park near Johnson City, Texas, requiring a 2 1/2 mile walk to the site. The weather forecast said it was expected to reach 100F. I believe it did! I used an AT Sprint 3 at 3 watts output on 20m and 40m, and a 44' end fed wire, driven against a few radials. I tried a few times for some contacts on 15 meters with an MFJ Cub 9315K, but never heard anything across the band. There was alot of fading on 20 meters. I had some trouble with heat exhaustion during the drive home, so will try something less ambitious if it is expected to be this hot next year." |

"Bee number 140 this year. Group participation was the theme for FOBB 2008. All the club members of the Mid-MO Amateur radio club were provided a map and directions to the operating site (Rockbridge Park) along with information to about FOBB and web links to the ARS website as an invitation to experience the Flight. Three stations (bees) were up on the air, K9ZTV, KCØPET, and me, WØESE. We found a site that allowed the bees to hike and visitors to drive to the site. Several members shared the fun and afforded us the opportunity to socialize and demonstrate portable HF stations. Actually, we three bees spent most of the contest enjoying the company of our guests. Of course this is Mid Missouri and the weather was typical of this time of year. Temperature was in the 90's and the humidity was very high, but hot and sticky is part of the FOBB experience here. Thank you, ARS, for sponsoring such a fun event! " |

"Unlike last year (thunderstorms) which forced a very short hike to my front yard and a mini Field Day set up, this year's wx was great. No need to make shelter. I was able to mount bike at around 13:15 local. Got the wife to take a parting photo before leaving my driveway. Ironically, the best site within walking distance is my own house. However, this also allows the bike trek to the nearest park to be cruise, as it is down hill to level almost all the way. Down in the low-lands, no support for a 102' foot doublet, thus I went with the typical trail friendly, 50' no counterpoise wire. Tried it Inv L, and then completely vertical. Vertical all the way seemed to do better. K-1, at 3 to 5W (my K-1 maxes out at 3W on 20m). I have now verified, there is a huge difference between a hilltop + 102 ' doublet (2007) versus a 50' NCA on a floodplain (2008). The band was nice and quiet! The park was virtually empty so I had my pick of either of the two available picnic tables under the trees. Received 1 nip from a sweat bee, and 1 nip from an ant, and ZERO mosquito bites. No DEET was used! :- ) " |

"One of the best contests created. Why? Where else do you find operators asking ""QRL?"" in a contest repeatedly? The consideration and respect is prevalent! A review of callsigns on QRZ.com indicate that most of us are a rare breed of old timers, qrpers, and homebrewers. Reading your bios is the best part. Best callsigns: N5ESE (with his most coveted cw, dit-dit, ringy-dingy callsign), and KFOUR with his uniqueness. Best Signal: W5JBV on 40m at 599 (and my antenna fell and was half on the ground). Most interesting fact: the 20m CW Band appeared dead until you got within plus/minus 5 KHz of 14.060, and it was full of QRP signals. So you know where the beef is! My regrets? I was a lame Bumble Bee, a death in the family prevented me from going to the field and using my 5 element 20m (field) bobtail that I was going to smoke you guys with. I only got to operate an hour, and to top that off, wind blew my wire antennas down, leaving me with a trap vertical for 20m, and a wire antenna half on the ground for 40m and the remaining part barely in the air. BUT, this contest lifted my spirits after our trying family crisis. Thank you everybody. It would be awesome if this could be a twice a year or more contest. " |

"The band conditions were the worst. Sounded like a radio blackout most of the time. I worked only 20 metres. I listened on 15 and never heard a peep (oops, I mean...Buzzzzz) On 40 I heard maybe one BB calling very weakly. I did work a few guys in Colorado, but only heard K7TQ weakly for a few seconds and then he was gone. I used an Elecraft K3 at 5 Watts to a loop in a dead apple tree in Kennebunkport, Maine, my new residence.I missed most of the first hour doing my temp job of counting heads at movie theatres. I actually get paid to go to the movies. Hey, someone has to do it." |

"I operated from the summit of Morrow Mt. in NC. My rig was K2 (set for 5W output) and the antenna was a 40M dipole up about 30 ft. All but 1 QSO were on 20M. Propagation was very poor but still managed a QSO with CA and WA. TX and CO were coming in the best. The ongoing motorcycle rally on the mountain that day made copy difficult; that will be my last operation from that location. The weather, however, cooperated – no showers but plenty of heat." |

"N3AO got me interested in QRP from the field and the Flight of the Bumblebees is my first attempt at backpacking a HF station into the bush. I had a grand time! I carried my K2 and N3AO's KX1 up Cloyd's Mountain in Pulaski County Virginia and operated a little over an hour, before I had to head back down again. "I had big plans to load all my gear into my kayak and to paddle out the Estero Americano to the beach about six miles. After checking the weather report, fog lasting until about 2pm, winds about 25 knots, I decided to take a land based approach. I loaded my gear into a two wheeled cart and walked out to Schollenberger Park, a great walk/bike trail around a marsh crowded with waterfowl. I set up my Index Labs QRP+, a 33ft vertical using an MFJ “fishing pole”, and a 40 meter dipole using a 20 ft “Black Widow.” I also lugged along a 5AH gel cell, my LDG QRP Autotuner, the trusty J-37 Key, and of course pen and paper for logging.I answered all the CQs I heard, for 10 contacts and got 2 more in answer to my CQs. Two contacts on 40M, and ten on 20M. Several time I tuned 15M and 10M but nothing heard. The dipole worked better on 40 meters and the vertical seemed better on 20. A good bit of work for 12 contacts in three and a half hours but what fun! I had numerous visitors come up to the table and ask what the heck I was doing. My first answer always was, “I’m trying to contact aliens.” If they laughed, then I would explain what I was up to; if they took me serious I would stay serious and not explain. One visitor was a new ham from the area who admired the setup and said he would like to learn code! All in all a fun day playing radio!" |

" I set-up about 200 feet south of our country house near Port Hope, ON after our weekend visitors departed on Sunday noon. The weather was clear and breezy, so I did not put up a tent or tarp. My 40 m dipole fed with 30 feet of RG174 floated at about 15 feet. (I need taller trees!). The rig was a K1 at 3 to 4 W output with a Blue Racer Bug. 40 cw was full of QRN from distant thunderstorms. There was no need to keep a dupe sheet. Total contacts (all Bees) were just 5: N3AO, WA8REI, AI4BJ, W3DP, AB4I. About 4 pm things looked ominous and I managed to decamp just before the deluge. "Although my log is no indication, this was an exciting contest for me. I was working the contest and doing some work on the computer at the same time. It was just starting, and there were only 4 stations in the log. I can't say that I was competing, but this was going to be fun. It was getting darker outside, so I looked at NEXRAD and saw that storms were moving toward me, but they seemed far enough off that I could keep operating for a while. A station was calling CQ BB, so I put on the head phones and started to send my call. CRASH-BOOM! The headphones were maxed out and my ears were ringing! Before the thunder hit, I had the antenna grounded and was shutting down fast. The K1 had gone dead, and the LDG tuner was clacking away non-stop. In a minute, everything was shut down, and stayed that way for the remainder of the contest. Oh well. If the K1 is dead, it must be time to build a K2. " |

"I was not well organized. I didn't get to my site until more than an hour after the start time, and by the time I was organized and ready to go, it was 3 p.m. and lightning from a serious thunderstorm was only about 1 mile away, so I decided to come down from the tree house (30' up in a tall tree on a ridgetop) and wait it out in a cabin on the property. The heavy rain and lightning lasted an hour, so I only had an hour left to operate before the end. Somebody left a brick on the dash side of their keyer and I couldn't hear much below 14.060 Mhz. The static was heavy. But I made a few QSOs and mostly caught everyone I heard sending CQ BB. My own CQs were unanswered. I listened for activity on 15 (nothing) and 40 (very little), but I was satisfied with 20. The HW-8, tuner, key, speaker, battery, antenna, tools, and other junk I thought I might need weighed 14 lbs, including the backpack I carried it in. I'd want to go lighter for a real backpacking expedition, but this was a good exercise and I have some ideas about how to do it better next time." |

"its almost embarrassing to submit an entry with only one contact, but i figured, what the heck, as it was my first time as a bumblebee. it was a bad time of the day in tennessee for any band actvity in my area. couple that with storms moving in, and everybody was deep in the mud. close to 100 degrees outside, a breeze every now and then - but NOT often enough. fortunately, i had plenty of water and hung in there. later in the day, when i walked in the front door, lugging my gear, all sunburned and sweaty, my xyl told me i'd been totally crazy. looking back, i probably was. however, it was fun, although a bit overly frustrating. i just wish i could have heard some other bees (or darned near anybody). i was using my k1 with an extrenal battery pack, random wire of around 30 feet. oh well, maybe i'll have better luck next year. conditions can't stay this bad forever. "Unfortunately, I'm reporting my score all too early. No bumblebees for me... Murphy wins. It's been raining on and off all day, with frequent thunder and lightning. The rain has varied from a drizzle to a downpour. Not a day to be sitting next to a lightning rod on a spit of land justting into Long Island Sound. I had been looking forward to this. Perhaps next year. " |

No buzzing for me this year - something of a disappointment after all the organizing work. But I had an adventure just the same - during the contest, I was driving to the Lone Pine area, to climb Mt. Langley (walk-up) and Mt. Whitney (East Face). WX was perfect and both attempts were successful. |

It was my pleasure. Next year, I might even get to be a /BB again!

Echoing Jim's comment; it really helps heighten interest in the event to have the results rolled up so promptly. Thanks very much for taking charge and keeping FoBB a vital activity for QRPers.
